Cross Country, PTO, Fiesta, Weather Wise Kids, and more!

Congratulations to the Cross Country team (many members pictured above) for another great race!  All of the students recorded personal bests and met goals.  The girl’s team placed 1st out of the 5 area teams!  Their final meet next Wednesday is the Championship Meet.  Save the date and come cheer on our GATORS!

The next PTO Meeting will be on Tuesday, October 17.  Coffee social begins at 8:00 am with the meeting to follow at 8:30 am.  It’s not too late to get involved.  Email pto@spma.com and sign-up on the bulletin board to help.

hispanic heritage month 3_0

In October’s newsletter, we mentioned that details were still being worked out for our Fiesta in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.  The Cultural Fiesta on the calendar for tomorrow will not take place.  Instead, we will be holding this event on Friday, October 27 during school hours.  Classrooms will take part in lessons about Spanish-speaking countries, enjoy food tastings, music, art, pinatas, and other fun things.  Our goal in starting on a smaller scale is to make this a big student-parent-staff event next year.  Thank you for your help and support!  We know that the students are going to have a great time!  Muchas Gracias to Señora Bibi for leading this new event for SPMA!

Week of October 8

Congrats to the Cross Country runners!  At last week’s meet, they came in 2nd place (girls) and 6th place (boys) out of 9 teams.  All runners recorded personal bests!  They only have two meets left for the season, so please come out and support this young team.  GO GATORS!

IMG_0722The SPMA PTO is collecting bottles of wine for a fun Wine Pull at the Fall Festival on November 5!  Drop off your bottle at carpool or inside the school lobby.  For more information, email pto@spma.com.  Don’t forget to sign-up to help at the festival.  The sheets are located on the bulletin board just inside the front doors.

Conference sheets have been placed in the lobby.  Please sign-up for a Parent-Teacher conference.  There will be an early dismissal at 11:30 and Noon on Thursday, October 19.  School will be closed on Friday, October 20.

There are a few spaces remaining for Suzuki Violin!  We will be hosting a Parent Ed class for everyone who would like to learn a little bit more about the amazing benefits of playing an instrument.  Additionally, parents can learn more about the parts of a violin and beginning instruction.  Stay tuned for details.  Unsure about violin requirements?  Email our music teacher/Suzuki violin instructor, Joy Krimm, for more information!

PTO News

Thank you to all of our families, staff, and friends who have joined the PTO or expressed interest in volunteering for school events!  The PTO officers put together a wonderful Parent’s Night Out last week, and they look forward to increasing attendance.  They have posted sign-up sheets for various school events, ways to get involved, and help on the bulletin board in the lobby.  Please sign-up soon!

The PTO would like to plan events that are convenient for all families and would bring us together as a community. To be able to do that, we’d like to get your opinions on what would work for your family.  Please join the Sea Pines Montessori Academy PTO group on Facebook, if you haven’t already, and give your opinion on our online poll. The PTO’s hope is to bring our families together to learn more about the school, more about each other, as well as create a resource for our parents. The stronger we are as a community, the stronger the school can be as a whole.  Thank you for participating!

This week’s Cross Country meet will be right in our own backyard at the Sea Pines Forest Preserve!  The race will begin and end on Hilton Head Prep’s Football Field.  The Varsity race begins at 4:00 p.m. and Middle School race, which SPMA will be participating in, begins around 4:45 p.m. Please come support your fellow Gators!!!

FINAL CALL

Final Call for Basketball Sign-Ups: SPMA Basketball practice will begin during the week of October 30th.  If your child is interested in playing, please contact Athletic Director Ben Kozik at benkozik@spma.com if you have not done so already. Practices will be from 3:00-4:30 p.m. with exact days to be determined.  There will be a fee associated with playing.

Don’t forget that school pictures are coming up!  Photos will be taken on October 17 and 18.  Classroom schedules will be sent out at the end of the week.  Uniforms are not required either day; however, if your child has fitness or cross country, he/she will need a change of clothes and sneakers.

Parent-Teacher conferences will take place on October 19 and 20.  Sign-up forms will be placed in the lobby at the end of the week.  Don’t forget to save this important date!  Remember that children should not be present for conferences.

Call for sign-ups & reminders

LAST CALL FOR GOLF SIGNUPS
SPMA is starting its inaugural golf program for 4th through 8th grade. Both boys and girls are welcome to join. Grades 6th-8th will participate in matches against other SCISA schools. Please email Athletic Director Ben Kozik at benkozik@spma.com to express your child’s interest. There will be a fee associated with playing.
SECOND CALL FOR BASKETBALL SIGNUPS
SPMA is looking to start up basketball teams again this fall. We have some schools who have shown interest in playing games. In order to begin scheduling, we need to know the number of participants and grade levels. This is open to grades 3-8. Please email Athletic Director Ben Kozik at benkozik@spma.com. There will be a fee associated with playing.

CROSS COUNTRY MEET TIME & LOCATION CHANGED
This week’s Cross Country meet will take place at the Hardeeville/Ridgeland Middle School instead of John Paul II due to running trail conditions. The address is 150 Hurricane Alley, Hardeeville, SC 29927. The Varsity meet begins at 4:00 p.m., with the JV/Middle School meet following directly after. SPMA will run in the latter one.  Please come support your Gators!

The PTO’s Parent’s Night Out event is only two nights away.  Don’t forget to join us this Thursday from 5-8pm at Muse Gallery (65 Arrow Road, HHI) with catering by Jane Bistro.  This will be fun!

It’s not too late for a September donation!  We are getting close to our 50% mark ALREADY!  Every little bit counts.  An average of only $250 per family helps us meet our yearly goal.  Monies raised go towards Athletics, Building & Grounds, Security, Professional development, Hurricane Matthew material replacements.  Though we received some insurance money for materials last year, the depreciation value left little for replacement.  Download an Annual Fund Donation Form !   Thank you so much for your support!

To SPMA Families:
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all of you for participating in the SPMA Cares for Texas Drive. Even in short notice and with Irma heading our way, you rallied together and donated much needed supplies for the men, women and children of Houston.
Thank you again for your generosity, and teaching our kids the wonderful feeling of giving and helping others in need.
We will be following up with an Adopt a Classroom Project in the Houston schools as well.  We will partner with a school in need and send boxes of school supplies- a great way to connect our kids with their kids!

Fun events for parents & students!

The PTO will join carpool tomorrow to encourage families to become members, attend the first meeting, and have more fun at school!  Don’t miss this first meeting on Tuesday!

Our Parent Ed Cafe: So you want to be a substitute?  has been rescheduled for this Thursday, September 21 at 8:30 am beginning in the lobby.  Come in, grab some coffee, and learn more about the Montessori philosophy, tour the classrooms, observe the teachers, and ask questions.  We are so grateful to have so many parent volunteers at SPMA!  Substituting does require a full file including fingerprinting and a background check.  We make that part easy for you!

The Cross Country team regroups after two weather cancellations!  Come support your fellow Gators this Wednesday, September 20.  The meet has been moved to Bolden (2 Albacore Road in Beaufort) with a 4:30 start time.

Sign-ups for the first set of after school clubs has begun.  A complete list will be released as the Cross Country season comes to a close.  Sweet Feet sign-ups are coming to a close.  Prior to evacuation, Coach Ben sent out Golf Details about a new team forming!  Golf is available to boys and girls in 4th grade and up!  Basketball season is just around the corner.  Boys and girls in grades 3 and up can join.  For more information or to sign up for either club, please email our Athletics Director, Ben Kozik, at benkozik@spma.com.   Lego Club and Robotics sign-up has started.  Space is limited so be sure to Sign Up for Lego & Robotics soon.  First come, first served.  Keep watching for information on Oceanography Club, Yoga, and a Sports Club for our youngest friends!

School Closing- next week’s dates

Good morning,

I hope that all of you are safely at your destination by now, or if choosing to stay behind, are well-prepared.  The governor did issue a mandatory evacuation [beginning at 10:00am this morning] of our barrier islands.

We are so thankful for the change in Irma’s cone, though the feeling is bittersweet since it only means that some other beautiful city will heed the brunt.  Hilton Head Island is not quite out the woods as we will have to wait and see if/how the wind, rain, storms, surge etc. affects us.

At this time, SPMA will be closed on Tuesday, September 12 and Wednesday, September 13 to allow time to assess the school, for staff to return, and for families to unpack.  It is quite possible that we will close for additional days, which will be decided no later than Tuesday afternoon.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all Floridians as they await Hurricane Irma.

Dear Parents,

The staff of SPMA did an amazing job at preparing the classrooms and school!  Thank you for picking up from school early today.  It was appreciated!

At this time, school will be closed on Friday, September 8 through Monday, September 11, at minimum.  We will continue to update families.

Hurricane Irma update

Wednesday, September 6  3:30 pm

Dear Parents,

As of right now, we will be closing school at 3:00 pm [tomorrow] Thursday, September 7.  There will be 1:00 and 3:00 dismissals.  There will be NO crew or after school activities.  School will remain closed on Friday, September 8.

Though this is an “early call,” we need time to plan and prepare the classrooms.  We had a vast amount of damage last year from Hurricane Matthew, which also taught us a lot about our surrounding water flow.  In hopes of being able to open more quickly and with less damage, we have a large to-do list.  A Thursday early dismissal and closure on Friday allows our teachers to enact both professional AND personal plans.  When we met as a staff at 7:30 this morning, we decided that we would rather do all this prep work and the hurricane miss us, than chance an evacuation order over the weekend leaving the classrooms unprotected.  Tomorrow’s dismissal time is subject to change based on newer information.  A resulting change would mean an earlier dismissal, not later.  Be sure to check your emails often.

We hope that everyone remains safe over the course of Hurricane Irma and any severe weather associated with the storm.  SPMA will continue to provide weather and school alerts/announcements in the coming days.
