2018- in with a bang!


Dear Parents,

Due to the impending weather conditions and safety of the staff and families, SPMA will be closed on Wednesday, January 3.  We will keep you abreast of any impacts for Thursday.

It’s not too late to sign up your 1st and 2nd graders for basketball club! Turn in your  Basketball Sign-up Form and fee to the main office.  Coach Ben has also listed some dress suggestions for participation.     Sample Dress Code:  

T-shirt (warmer days) or Long sleeve shirt (cooler days) (ex: Long Sleeve Cold-Gear Under Armour Shirt will also do)                                                                                                                                                                               Shorts (warmer days) or Wind Pants/Training Pants (cooler days) (ex: Cold Gear Under Armour Tights with shorts on top will also do)                                                                                                                                       Basketball Shoes (athletic sneakers are also okay – please just no boots, dress shoes, sandals, flat-bottom shoes, etc.)                                                                                                                                                                             Dri-fit socks (warmer days) or Thicker cotton socks (cooler days)                                                                         Your child can also bring a hat if chilly outside.

Week ending FUN!


Only 1 and 1/2 days left to bid on the great items in the school lobby!  The PTO has led the charge in putting together a wonderful array of classroom baskets and teacher outings.  Please bid on these amazing items!  One of the current fundraising goals will be sending teachers to the national AMS conference in Denver, which takes place in March.  There, teachers attend seminars on classroom extensions, lesson planning, and more, while also shopping for new classroom materials!


Can’t be present on Friday at noon for a closing bid?  Fill in a GHOST BID sheet located in the lobby. Write your name, item(s) you are interested in, and maximum bid, and we will try and win it on your behalf!


Science Fair is this Friday from 10-11:30 am.  We will not hold carpool on Friday afternoon!  Lower School pick-up will be from 11:00-11:30 am as we encourage all families to stop by the Science Fair with all Primary students.  Upper School families should plan on attending Science Fair and removing projects no later than noon.


1st and 2nd grade basketball club is here!

First come, first served sign-up.

Coach Ben is starting up a introductory basketball course for students in 1st and 2nd grade beginning in January of 2018. The course will last for four sessions, once per week. It will introduce the basic fundamentals of the game of basketball and will include basketball related games for children. The sessions will be on Mondays starting on January 8th from 3:00-4:00 p.m. on the court next to the green space. The cost for the four sessions is $40 per student.  Space limited.
Practice dates will be on the following:
January 8th
January 22nd
January 29th
February 5th
(There will be no practice on January 15th, as the school is closed.)
Please fill out the the Basketball Sign-up Form and return it to Chris Harris or Coach Ben by January 5th.

Good evening SPMA!  Please read the attached letter regarding RAIN DATE plans for the Candlelit Concert and Auction.  We all know that weather on the island seems to shift by the minute, so we will be watching the forecast closely and notifying everyone by Thursday morning.  In the meantime, check out some more great auction items!

December has arrived!


Save the date!  The Candlelit Concert & Silent Auction will be next Friday, December 8 at 5:30 pm!  Please note that there will be dismissals at 1:00 and 3:00NO CREW.


Bidding opens TOMORROW and will close shortly after the Concert next week.  Be sure to place your bids early!


The December 2017 Newsletter is here!  Did you know that we are only $1,100 away from meeting our mid-year goal of $10,000 for the Annual Fund, and 60% away from our 100% family participation goal?  Please help us by pledging today: Annual Fund Donation Form!

End of week updates


School pictures are in and links have been distributed.  If you have not received your child’s gallery, please email for the link and code.  Please turn in all orders by Monday.  Thank you!


There are only 2 short days left to get some great books at our school Book Fair!  Be sure to check out your child’s and classroom’s wish list, too!


Grandparent’s Day takes place next Tuesday (11/21).  We are excited to welcome all of these special loved ones to school.  Be sure to arrive at your child’s specific time block.  Teachers will send out reminder emails of that special time frame.


School will be closing on Tuesday, November 21 at 11:30 am (Lower School) and Noon (Upper School) and will reopen on Monday, November 27.  We wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels!

Packing in the thankfulness!


Thank you to the PTO, SPMA Staff, and all of the Parent Volunteers who worked together for a fun Fall Festival!  We appreciate this amazing event, and look forward to seeing everyone again at the upcoming Book Fair, Candlelit Concert, and Science Fair!


The National Junior Beta Club’s motto is “to promote the ideals of academic achievement, character, leadership and service among elementary and secondary school students.”  Their next service project to pack as many shoeboxes as possible for Samaritan’s Purse.  Please help them by donating an item from your child’s class wish list:

Preprimary–  Toys and Art Supplies for boys and girls aged 2-4 : small stuffed animals, balls, small toys, crayons, and coloring books
Primary– Clothes and Health Items: blankets, hairbrushes, band-aids, clothes (to fit a 2-4 year old child), socks
Lower El– Clothes and Health Items: blankets, hairbrushes, band-aids, clothes (to fit a 5-9 year old), socks, hats
Upper El & Middle School- Toys, Games, Art Supplies (crayons, markers, colored pencils, paper, coloring books), balls with pump, stuffed animals, small toys, jump ropes, card games
Items can be placed in the collection box near the front door or sent in with your child.  The Beta Club will be collecting through this Thursday, November 16, and then packing up their shoeboxes on Friday!  Thank you for your support!

The PTO will meet next Tuesday, November 14 at 8:00 am for a coffee social with the meeting to follow!  Please join them as they continue planning for more fun events.  If you enjoyed the Fall Festival (who didn’t?!?!), consider participating in their planning meetings.  Thank you to the officers (Tiffany Ruwadi, Meghan Green, Erin McMackin, & Whitney Hughes) for leading this group of awesome families!


Grandparent’s Day takes place on the last Tuesday before Thanksgiving Break (November 21).  This is also a half-day for all students and the final day for Book Fair!

Thank you for such a successful Fiesta!  We appreciate all of the hard work that Señora Bibi, the SPMA Staff, and the SPMA PTO put into our Cultural Fiesta.  The children had a great time, and we raised $215, which was promptly donated to the Hispanic Federation’s Unidos Relief Program!  Muchas Gracias!


Basketball in grades 3 and up begins tomorrow!  Be sure to turn in your form and fee!  Stay tuned for upcoming information on sports programming for younger students!  Coach Ben has some things in the planning stages.

PTO News

The PTO is still accepting wine donations for their Wine Pull!  All volunteers who signed up to bring food or drinks for the Fall Festival should bring those items to school on Friday.  Also, please note the time change: Due to Daylight Savings Time, the Fall Festival will be from 2:00 to 5:00 pm.  Also, congratulations to the Red Room for collecting the most money raised for professional development for the teachers!  Thank you to the PTO for organizing this!

Week of 10/23


Thank you to all of the parents for joining us for Parent Teacher conferences last week!  We loved seeing all of you throughout the building.  The next set of conferences will take place in January.


The Parent Ed Cafe scheduled for tomorrow will be re-scheduled in the coming weeks.  We would really like to have as many parents participate in these events as possible.  Be stay tuned for a brief survey about times/days that work best for your family.


Basketball Club sign-up has begun!  Be sure to download the Basketball Sign-Up Form and turn it in before next week’s deadline!  If you have questions about the program, contact our Director of Athletics, Coach Ben at

teacher_of_the_year_ceramic_ornament-r22f23a5628a246b88810376b8077db3a_x7s2y_8byvr_324Congrats to Coach Ben for being chosen as SPMA’s Teacher of the Year!  In this quick start to the school year, Coach Ben has done wonders for the Athletics and Fitness program including incorporating fitness with the younger primary students, installing much needed fitness equipment in the multipurpose room and green space, inspiring a huge cross country team to reach personal bests, and creating a year-long plan that will bring additional sports and fitness activities to our school.  He will be honored at the Sea Pines Country Club this Thursday.  GO GATORS!


Congratulations to the Middle School students for being accepted as participants in the island’s Student Government Day!

Student Government Day (“SGD”) is an opportunity for civic-minded sixth through tenth grade (6th through 10th grade) students, selected by an application process, to spend a day at Town Hall and experience first-hand our local government in action, learning about the policy-making procedures and operations of municipal government.

Participants will meet the Mayor, Town Council Members, Town Department Heads and Town Staff, and will engage in discussions with them about important Town matters. They will learn about the services provided by Town government and play the roles of Mayor, Council Members, Town Staff and Citizens in a Mock Special Town Council Meeting.


Dear Families,

The Hispanic Cultural Fiesta will be celebrated this Friday, October 27, from 9:00 to 12:30 as in-school assembly.  This will be a cultural extended lesson to students about the Spanish speaking countries including food tasting, arts, music, dancing and fun. Parental attendance is not required.  We hope to make this a whole-school experience next year.  This year, we would like to keep this relatively small.  Unless we can guarantee 100% parent participation, it is too hard on our youngest friends to see some parents attend but not their own.  We promise to take pictures!

We are asking each student to bring in (2) $1 bills.  One dollar will be given to the taqueria cart so that the students can experience purchasing an authentic taco, and the second dollar will be a donation for Puerto Rico Hurricane Irma Relief- specifically to the Hispanic Federation’s Unidos Page, where at least 90 cents of every dollar goes directly to relief funds.  You can begin to send the money in throughout the week, where it will be collected until Friday.
