Halloween, Art & Spanish, Kid’s Vote!


Please be safe tonight and heed the Town’s warnings about trick-or-treating!  

Always check your child’s candy!


The Manatees and Middle School had fun celebrating Dia de los Muertos today!  In a collaborative class with Spanish and Art, the students researched holiday masks, designs, and dancing, and then made their own masks and skulls.  Muchas gracias to Mrs. Wolfe y Señora Bibi!


Our 3rd through 8th grade students will be participating in the November 1 National Kid’s Election Day.
The 5th graders registered students in grades 3-8 to vote.  Each 5th year had voter registration cards and a list of 3-4 prospective voters.  They practiced the non-partisan registration process and encouraged candidates to exercise their right to vote; however, students could elect their right not to vote, too.  (A few did!)
Tomorrow, these 3rd through 8th grade registered “voters” will be given a ballot with the 4 (D, R, G, L party) candidates running for the office of President of the United States.  They will cast their anonymous vote after “checking in.”
Results will be posted prior to school ending on November 1.

The Middle School had a great time at IDEA Studio!  We look forward to more fun there.

Teacher of the Year, Book Fair, & Grandparent’s Day

Today, Kayla was honored during Hilton Head Island Rotary’s Annual Teacher Recognition Day and awarded a Proclamation by the Mayor, a gift basket, and a lovely framed award as our nominee from SPMA.

Art Supplies Needed!


Mrs. Wolfe will be making “bottle birdfeeders” for Grandparents Day.  We are asking families of students in Primary, LE, and UE to bring in a 2 Liter Size Soda Bottle (RINSED OUT), no later than Monday, October 31, 2016.

NO UPPER SCHOOL TENNIS TOMORROW, per the regular schedule.

SPMA Nutcracker Photo: Monday, October 24 8:30am 

All SPMA Nutcracker participants should come to school in their ballet clothes with a packed uniform outfit for a change of clothes.  We will be taking our annual photograph for the Nutcracker Ballet performances.  Congratulations to all of our ballerinas!  For tickets, please visit


SPMA will not be changing the school calendar as a result of the Hurricane Matthew evacuation; however, we strongly discourage families from ending their school year early.  Many of our families begin vacation during the last week of school.  This is typically fine since assessments, testing, and lessons have wrapped up while our students enjoy a more relaxed ending to their year- classroom parties, longer recess, group games, etc..

We will be pushing all Upper School testing and assessments back by one week and will continue to work through the end of the year.  This will also allow for teacher professional development to go forward as planned.  Unfortunately, many teacher training and continuing education programs were not affected by Hurricane Matthew, and thus, will not be altering their starting dates.

Final report cards will go out after graduation and teachers will be available for conference during teacher work week (5/30-6/2).  Thank you for your support!

Beta Club Pays It Forward & Free Dress Day

SPMA’s Junior Beta Club contributed to the Hurricane Matthew relief efforts!  They spent Monday after school cleaning up the school grounds, and Tuesday afternoon delivering cases of water to relief workers (tree removal, extraction, debris teams, etc.) in Sea Pines.  Thank you to Chris Lane, owner of Culligan Water Conditioning of the Low Country, for donating a pallet of water!  After providing all of the classrooms and teachers with water, we were left with so many cases, so the Beta Club paid that donation forward and continued the chain of gratitude.  It is so nice to see everyone helping one another and showing that we are all #hiltonheadstrong!

Dear Families,

Thank you for all of your encouraging and supportive words!  We are so happy to be back at school with (y)our children.

We were overwhelmed with the number of offers for help and decided to take the time to prioritize our needs and organize our minds before asking.  I have attached the list in the link below.  It has also been posted on the lobby bulletin board.  You can sign up there, or email me (melindacotter [at] spma[dot]com) and I will place your name on the master list.

SPMA Requests for Help

Please continue to arrive no later than 8:30 am.  While this is always important, it is more so now than ever.  Piano and violin lessons are occurring in the lobby and library.  The constant sound of the doorbell and students arriving is an interruption to those teachers who have been displaced.  We appreciate your efforts.

Conferences 10/20 and 10/21


Dear Families,

It was GREAT seeing everyone this morning!

Please note that conferences will be held this Thursday and Friday.  Thursday, October 20 is a halfday for students, with a Lower School 11:30 am dismissal and an Upper School 12:00 pm dismissal.  Lunch is not needed.  School is closed on Friday, October 21.

We invite everyone to park this afternoon and in the mornings this week so that you can come in to sign-up for conference slots.  The sign-up table is in the lobby.

This shortened week will allow us to continue clean-up efforts without children in the building, as well as provide the SPMA Staff with time to schedule personal appointments with regards to their own home needs.

Tomorrow, we will be posting a list of various things that are on our school “housekeeping” list.  We would love to have your help!

Ready for Monday!


Dear Parents,

I am so relieved that the boil advisory for South Island PSD has been lifted.  We look forward to welcoming everyone on Monday.  Should the south end of the island experience any changes in power, water, or sewer, we will notify you and change plans accordingly.

Thank you to all of the parents who have offered to help clean the school!  We sincerely appreciate it.  The leaning trees and dangling limbs made the environment too dangerous to accept help, so professionals have started the clean-up process.  We are happy to report that Fox Grape Rd and most of the parking lot have been cleared!  The playground will be next.

There will be opportunities for help.  When building work begins in both wings of the school, we will be looking for volunteers to help pack and box materials/furniture to move to storage until work has been completed.  Be on the look-out for that list.

Classroom combinations and lessons will carry on as previously listed with one exception.  Violin lessons will be held in the library, not the music room.

This weekend’s Reel in the Redfish tournament has been postponed.  For more information, contact the PTO, at pto [at] spma[dot]com.

School pictures will be made up on 11/30 and 12/1.  Mark your calendars!

Thank you for your continued support.  We can get through the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew together!  We look forward to seeing everyone’s smiling faces on Monday.  Please use carpool in the morning for an easy transition.  Let the normalcy commence!

Update- Important message


Wednesday, October 12 <> 8:30 pm

Dear Families,

I hope that everyone is safely at home or has plans to be so soon.

I just spent two hours walking our exterior and interior school grounds.  The school is intact and largely damage free in the sense that most rooms are fine, albeit water leaks from the roof.  Unfortunately, both wings of the building suffered damage from rising waters.  The entire Blue room, Violin Studio, old Resource room, and Primary closet are completely soaked and previously had standing water.  The Piano Studio, Spanish office, Middle School locker area, Upper School kitchen, and [possibly] Middle School also had standing water.   Our large playground also took a hit.  We lost our large center tree and two smaller ones.  More importantly, we lost a significant amount of surface fill.

We have contacted our insurance company and are expecting an adjustor to be on site tomorrow to [professionally] document everything.

Going forward, we will continue to aim for a start date of Monday, October 17 only if the boil advisory has been lifted by South Island PSD.  Under DHEC and DSS regulations, we cannot operate with a boil advisory in effect.

If we are able to open on Monday, the Blue room students will be combining with both Red and Purple classrooms.  Ashley S will join Purple and Marilee will join Red.  I have spoken to Ashley about the combination of students and she will be preparing a list and contacting Blue room families.

Violin lessons will be held in the Music Room.

Piano and guitar lessons will be held in the lobby.

Middle School can continue in their classroom with use of the Art Studio.  This may change based on what the adjustor discovers.

When cleaning/replacement work begins on the Upper School wing, Mudpuppies will join Moonshells, and all 3rd year students will join Manatees with one Lower El teacher.

All Spanish classes will be held in their respective classrooms during planned lesson times until further notice.

There will be no outdoor recess until all trees and limbs have been cleared, the equipment inspected, and fill added under drop zones.  I will be in discussions with Coach Ben about indoor recess and yoga.

Above all else, I am just so happy that all of our families and staff are safe. The rest can be managed. I hope to see everyone on Monday. If you need anything, please contact me!
