Crew provides the opportunity for children to eat a small snack with friends and to enjoy a second playground time in the afternoon. The children love to use their imaginations as they collaborate during free work both in the classroom and on the playground.
This program allows the opportunity for relaxed fun with friends while still implementing the important Montessori philosophy of respect for each other and their classroom that they practice
At 3:00 p.m., we will say good-bye to our “All Day” friends and welcome those older primary students who will be part of the Lower School Crew community.
Although the traditional Montessori lessons and work will remain out on the shelves for those who want to choose them, we also have two shelves in the room that are designated for after school play.
Play materials include board games, large floor puzzles, multiple building manipulatives, and items for pretend play.
The Crew program is designed to give children the opportunity to come together with friends, after school, in a safe and fun environment. The Crew room is setup so that children may choose individual work or group activities, while still adhering to the fundamental principles of any Montessori room: Respect of others, care of self, and care of the environment.
Together we will learn rules, along with sportsmanship, for traditional playground games and board games. In addition to friendship and fun, we will also encourage reading groups for the children. Children may choose to read a “take home” book from their Primary class or pick a favorite book from the library.
Children do not have to be able to read to participate. Children who are not yet reading may join the group and tell us about a favorite book that they would like to share.
This is a great way for children to gain confidence and learn a love for reading.
